Lesbian Mothers

(continued from page 1)

about the impact on their own sexuality, with older teenage boys the most likely to react negatively. Relationships with fathers either remained as noninvolved as they had been before the father left, or improved because of concerted efforts by father and child. The lover of the mother often received anger displaced from the mother or father; generally if a lover was not too anxious to be accepted by the child and gave the child space to grow into caring about her, the new family fared better. (From GCN, September 3, 1977)

A UCLA study concludes that young children of lesbian mothers do not develop the "deviant traits" that judges have been warned about in recent court battles which have often deprived lesbian mothers of custody. "It looks to us as though no features about these children are specifically related to the mothers' sexual choice," said Dr. Martha KirkPatrick, "We see some problems in some of the children, but what we're finding are the types of difficulties very commonly seen in the children of divorced parents -conflict of loyalties, a guilty concern as to the cause of the parents' split-up and anxiety about whether or not they will face further loss."

D

The researchers found no evidence to support accusations customarily heard in court cases involving lesbian mothers that the children will necessarily become gay or learn the social sex roles of the opposite sex. "We didn't find masculineappearing girls or feminine-appearing boys," Kirkpatrick states.

(From Lesbian Tide, Nov./Dec. 1976)

"Many lesbian mothers find they are not fully welcomed within the lesbian community, and it is hard for them to share feelings and experiences with mothers who are not lesbians. Many lesbians forget that a woman with children may also be a lesbian. We need to begin to understand why we react the way we do to women with children. How do we react to children in our community? Why? What if a woman has a male child? We need to support each other and try to understand the situation of women who have children, and who are members of our communities. We must realize the economic constraints placed on mothers.

We have to offer dependable childcare at all events. This will help more mothers have the time to come to events. It is important for those of us who aren't mothers to realize why we shy away from childcare responsibilities. If we spend time with children, we can raise our consciousness about what it means to be a lesbian mother. Wouldn't it be nice to have a community of women of all ages who are working, thinking, and playing together?" (Lesbian Connection, November 1977)

"... Lesbian mothers are caught. We are rejected by the straight world because we are homo. sexual and alienated from the gay community because we have children. Because of ignorance about homosexuality, insensitivity towards women, and a culture which places a low priority on children, we are fighting the consequences of being Lesbians and single parents every day....' (Lesbian Mothers Support Group)

"I think only another lesbian mother who has been to court understands the range of feelings, the fear, the pain as she looks at her children, and the prayers that are said. Not to mention the hard work that goes into preparing for the [custody] case." (Mom's Apple Pie, January 1977)

these women wanted very much to be mothers. The desire to be a mother is very strong in many lesbians. Sexual choice doesn't necessarily have anything to do with whether or not one wants to be a parent."
